From Samuel Pepys to Anne Frank to Bridget Jones to Adrian Mole…diaries have always been a much-loved part of our culture.
As a nation, we’re fascinated by other peoples’ lives.
And our obsession with reading other peoples’ diaries is still as strong as ever.
On YouTube, a video named ‘I just bought a total stranger’s diary’ has been viewed 6.5 million times since it launched in 2017.
There’s even a ‘diary hunter’ trend where people scour charity shops and eBay to collect diaries written by complete strangers and the study found a third of us still use paper diaries.
And the growth in trendy planning systems like the Bullet Planner – along with journals on everything from planning your wedding to natural hair care – mean keeping a diary is still one of the nation’s favourite pastimes.
Sales of journals increased by 70 per cent at the start of Lockdown, according to Smythson, who noted a 200 per cent increase in demand for stationery as isolating prompted people to put pen to paper.

Janet Murray is the creator of the Social Media Diary & Planner – a content planner for entrepreneurs and creatives.
Despite being one of the most disorganised people in the world, former journalist, Janet has always managed to plan.
And when she was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year, at the age of 45, she realised that being able to plan was her coping strategy.
Janet came up with the idea of creating a planning diary after seeing fellow entrepreneurs struggle to think of ideas to promote their businesses.
The diary contains hundreds of key dates and awareness days and templates for annual, monthly, weekly and daily content planning.
Janet is a podcaster, author and speaker who has spoken all over the world about content strategy, marketing and building online audiences.
